Burlington, VT – Bitterly cold temperatures will continue to grip Vermont this week, with wind chills plunging as low as -20 degrees. Snow showers are possible today, with frigid conditions lingering through Thursday, prompting warnings for residents and travelers.
According to the National Weather Service, isolated snow showers are expected after 3 p.m. today, with high temperatures reaching 15°F and wind chills as low as -6°F. Tonight, temperatures will plummet to 1°F, with increasing south winds, intensifying the cold. The wind chill warning remains in effect for the northern and central regions.
Dangerously low wind chills could cause frostbite in minutes. Those venturing outdoors should dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, and limit exposure. Travelers on I-89 and local roadways should prepare for icy patches and reduced visibility during snow showers.
Looking ahead, Wednesday will remain sunny but frigid, with highs near 14°F and wind chills nearing -9°F. Thursday will see a slight warm-up, reaching 21°F, though cold winds will persist. By Friday, highs will climb to a milder 24°F under partly sunny skies.
This weekend offers some reprieve as temperatures approach the upper 20s, with a 30% chance of snow showers returning Sunday. Still, the bitter cold of midweek underscores the need for caution.
Residents should stay updated on changing conditions by checking weather.gov or local forecasts. Limit outdoor activities, and look out for vulnerable neighbors during this cold snap.
