Champaign, IL – A winter weather system is expected to bring light snow to eastern and southeastern Illinois beginning Thursday evening and continuing into Friday. Residents near I-70 should prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions as snowfall amounts of up to 2 inches are possible.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest chance for measurable snow will be in southeastern Illinois, where a 50-58% probability of at least 1 inch exists. The system is predicted to intensify late Thursday and may disrupt both morning and evening commutes on Friday due to slippery conditions. Areas farther north could also see snow if the storm track shifts, meteorologists caution.

Temperatures will remain cold, with highs near 22 degrees on Thursday and dropping to 15 degrees overnight. Winds from the south will increase Thursday night, contributing to wind chills near zero. Friday’s high will reach 27 degrees before dipping back to 13 degrees overnight.

Residents are advised to monitor road conditions, particularly near I-70, and allow extra travel time during peak commuting hours on Friday. Drivers should reduce speeds and exercise caution on icy roads.

Looking ahead, conditions will improve over the weekend, with sunny skies and highs near 24 degrees expected Saturday. Another cold front could bring more winter weather next week, so residents should remain vigilant.

Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service as the forecast develops.
