Albuquerque, NM – Temperatures will drop sharply across New Mexico this weekend as an Arctic air mass moves into the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of frigid wind chills, gusty winds, and light snow in northeastern parts of the state.

According to the NWS Albuquerque, gusts of up to 60 mph on Friday could create patchy blowing dust, reducing visibility on highways like I-40 and U.S. Route 285. These winds may pose a risk for drivers, especially on north-south-oriented roads. Residents in northeast New Mexico should prepare for subzero wind chills by Saturday morning, with frostbite possible in minutes.

Temperatures will begin falling dramatically Friday night, with a high of 32°F in Santa Fe on Saturday and lows plunging to single digits. The coldest spots, including Raton and Clayton, may see temperatures as low as -10°F, with wind chill values nearing -20°F.

The NWS forecasts light snow across northeastern New Mexico through Sunday morning, with accumulations of 1–2 inches near the Colorado border. While impacts will be limited, slick roads are expected. The wind chill could make outdoor exposure hazardous, so residents are urged to minimize time outdoors and dress in layers.

Looking ahead, temperatures will stay below freezing through early next week, with another round of extreme cold expected Tuesday night. Stay updated on road conditions through New Mexico Department of Transportation and avoid unnecessary travel during peak winds.
