A mix of snow and freezing rain is forecast for Illinois on Sunday, followed by plunging temperatures and dangerous wind chills into next week. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of hazardous travel conditions and the risk of frostbite as temperatures drop.

According to the NWS, light snow will begin late Saturday night, bringing up to one inch of accumulation. On Sunday, snow will transition to freezing drizzle by the afternoon, potentially creating slick roads and dangerous driving conditions, especially on untreated surfaces. Drivers on major roadways, including I-90 and I-294, should remain cautious.

By Monday morning, temperatures will plummet, with daytime highs around 14 degrees and wind chills ranging from -5 to -20 degrees. The coldest conditions are expected early Tuesday, with wind chills as low as -20. These extreme temperatures pose a risk for frostbite on exposed skin within minutes.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities and dress in multiple warm layers if venturing out. Additionally, pet owners are reminded to keep animals indoors and away from the cold. The NWS advises preparing homes for subzero temperatures, including insulating pipes to prevent freezing.

Looking ahead, temperatures will slowly improve by midweek. Tuesday will remain bitterly cold with highs near 15 degrees. By Wednesday, highs will reach the low 20s under mostly sunny skies.
