Charleston, WV – Residents in West Virginia should prepare for accumulating snow and strong winds as winter weather continues through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for mountain areas, where snow totals could reach up to 6 inches.
According to the NWS Charleston office, gusty winds of up to 55 mph may accompany snow in higher elevations, making travel extremely difficult. Affected areas include mountainous regions near Elkins and Morgantown, with the highest accumulations expected above 3,000 feet. Lower elevations may see flurries or light snow showers with little to no accumulation.
Drivers are urged to avoid mountain roads and highways, including US Route 219 and State Route 33, as conditions will remain treacherous into early Thursday. Power outages are also possible due to high winds snapping tree branches and utility lines. Residents should charge devices and stock emergency supplies ahead of time.
Looking ahead, Thursday will see clearing skies with highs near 38°F in Charleston, but another round of snow is forecast for Friday. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply over the weekend, with lows in the mid-teens by Saturday night.
