Charleston, WV – A quick-hitting weather system will bring light snow and gusty winds to West Virginia today, creating slippery road conditions. Drivers on major routes, including I-77, should prepare for patches of black ice and visibility challenges.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, less than an inch of snow is expected in lowland areas, with a few inches possible in the mountains. Bitter cold temperatures will linger through Thursday, with wind chill values dropping to single digits in Charleston and as low as -22°F in higher elevations.
This afternoon, a chance of snow showers will develop after 2 p.m., continuing into the evening. Gusty northwest winds of up to 15 mph will add to the frigid conditions. By tonight, temperatures will plummet to 6°F in Charleston, with a wind chill of -13°F.
Residents are advised to use extreme caution when traveling, as melting snow from earlier in the week has created widespread black ice on untreated surfaces. Pedestrians should also watch for icy sidewalks and dress in layers to combat the dangerously low temperatures.
Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring occasional flurries and mostly clear skies, with highs near 25°F. Overnight, expect temperatures to drop again into the single digits. Thursday will stay cold, with highs of 35°F and isolated snow showers.
The cold snap will begin to ease Friday with scattered flurries in the morning, followed by a high of 44°F. By Saturday, rain will return, with temperatures climbing to the mid-40s.
