Albuquerque, NM – Albuquerque residents are facing unhealthy air conditions today due to smoke from a prescribed burn in the Jemez Mountains. An Air Quality Alert remains in effect through 11 a.m. Friday, with visibility falling below five miles in areas. The alert has raised concerns for those near I-40 and I-25, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues.

According to the National Weather Service, AQI levels have exceeded 150, making it unsafe for prolonged outdoor activities. Residents are advised to stay indoors, especially those with respiratory illnesses, asthma, or heart conditions. If visibility drops below three miles, even healthy individuals should reduce outdoor activity.

The 5-3-1 visibility method is recommended to assess outdoor safety. This system helps determine air quality based on how far one can see. Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions and adjust activities accordingly. By Sunday, the smoke is expected to clear, but temperatures will remain high, reaching 90°F throughout the weekend.
