Chicago, IL – Snowfall across northern Illinois is causing slick and hazardous road conditions Thursday morning, particularly in less-traveled areas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that additional snowfall of less than half an inch blanketed the region overnight, making untreated roads, parking lots, and sidewalks slippery. Areas around Rockford, Joliet, and Valparaiso are particularly affected. Morning commuters are advised to plan for delays, as snow continues clearing eastward through midday.
The heaviest snowfall has shifted toward Porter County, Indiana, but lingering lake-effect snow could cause icy patches to persist into Thursday afternoon. Highs in the low 20s may help improve road conditions slightly, but temperatures will plummet again overnight. Drivers should remain cautious, especially on bridges, overpasses, and rural roads that are more likely to freeze.
As Friday approaches, expect colder conditions with lows dropping to -5°F and wind chills as low as -15°F. These dangerously low temperatures necessitate preparedness. Ensure vehicles are equipped with blankets, food, and water, and limit time spent outdoors.
With better weather expected by Saturday and Sunday, Illinoisans can look forward to warmer days, though continued vigilance is necessary for safety on the roads.
