Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Thunderstorms are expected to drench eastern South Dakota through Thursday, with Sioux Falls and surrounding areas potentially seeing up to 1.5 inches of rain and a heightened risk of flooding and slick road conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, showers and scattered storms will expand late Wednesday night and persist through the day Thursday. Areas receiving over an inch of rain may experience localized ponding of water and possible hydroplaning on roads, especially during morning and evening commutes.

The greatest rainfall potential—over 1.5 inches—is centered along the I-29 corridor from Yankton through Brookings, with a 30–50% chance of heavier totals. Southeastern counties including Clay, Turner, Lincoln, and Union are also in the zone of significant precipitation. Drivers on highways such as US-81 and SD-19 should remain cautious.

With temperatures dropping and skies remaining cloudy, residents are urged to limit non-essential travel, charge mobile devices, and monitor for localized flooding. The NWS notes that a shift in the storm track could further increase rainfall amounts in some communities.

Showers are expected to taper off by Thursday night, though additional advisories may be issued depending on rainfall trends. Stay tuned to local alerts for the latest updates.
