SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Northwest Iowa is bracing for strong to severe thunderstorms beginning Wednesday and continuing through Thursday night, with the primary threats being large hail and damaging wind gusts.
According to the National Weather Service, the highest potential for severe weather exists on Wednesday, with communities including Sioux City, Spencer, and Storm Lake under a “Slight Risk.” Residents in these areas should be prepared for storms capable of producing significant hail and powerful winds that could impact travel and cause isolated power outages. Locally heavy rain is also possible, which may lead to minor flooding in low-lying areas.
The threat, though slightly diminished, will persist into Thursday. Forecasters indicate another round of isolated severe storms is possible across the region, including in Sheldon and Sioux City. Key travel corridors like Interstate 29 and U.S. Route 71 could be affected during the storm periods.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and stay informed on the latest updates. The possibility for storm watches and warnings will remain elevated through Thursday evening.
