Reno, NV – A winter storm is set to bring significant snowfall and strong winds to the Greater Lake Tahoe area, impacting travel and safety through the weekend and into Monday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 11 p.m. Friday, followed by a Winter Storm Watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. According to the NWS, up to 7 inches of snow could accumulate at the Sierra crest by Friday night, while ridge winds may gust up to 70 mph, creating hazardous conditions. Lake Tahoe could see wind gusts up to 40 mph and waves reaching 2 to 3 feet.

The Winter Storm Watch warns of heavier snowfall beginning Sunday afternoon, with accumulations of 1 to 2 feet expected at the Sierra crest and 6 to 12 inches below 7,000 feet. Ridge winds could reach up to 80 mph, potentially causing widespread power outages and tree damage.

Travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially on mountain passes. The Friday evening and Monday morning commutes are expected to be particularly impacted. Officials urge drivers to slow down, use caution, and check road conditions by calling 511.

Residents and visitors should monitor the latest forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions as the storm moves through the region.
