Columbia, SC – A brief tornado touched down in northern Colleton County on Thursday, just ahead of Hurricane Helene’s arrival. The EF1 tornado, with peak winds of 90 mph, traveled nearly eight miles before dissipating in Bamberg County.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the tornado first made contact near Gabriel Road in Colleton County at 12:52 p.m. before lifting near Baucham Road, east of Highway 601. The tornado had a maximum width of 150 yards. No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the storm.
Officials from the NWS in Charleston worked closely with other regional offices to assess the damage. While the tornado was short-lived, it caused disruption along its path.
