Wichita, KS – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across Kansas, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to extend a Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. Sunday. Residents in the affected areas should prepare for dangerous conditions, including heavy snow, sleet, and significant ice accumulation.

According to the NWS, central Kansas is expected to see snow totals between 6 and 11 inches, with southern Kansas receiving between 3 and 6 inches. Sleet accumulations could reach half an inch, while ice buildup ranging from one-tenth to half an inch is possible across the region. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph are expected, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The storm is likely to make travel extremely hazardous, with slick roads and poor visibility. Power outages and tree damage are anticipated due to ice accumulation and strong winds. Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is required, authorities recommend carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.

For the latest road conditions, residents can call 511 for updates. This storm is expected to continue through Sunday evening.
