Blacksburg, VA – Residents across Southwest Virginia should brace for severe weather today, with storms expected from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Heavy rain and damaging winds are forecast, posing significant risks of flash flooding and power outages. The highest threat of wind damage will likely occur south of Highway 460, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS advises residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay alert, as excessive rainfall could lead to localized flooding. A wind advisory remains in effect for the western mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, and southeast West Virginia, where gusts may down trees and power lines.

Monday will bring mostly sunny skies, with a high near 54°F, providing some relief from Sunday’s storms. However, another round of rain is expected on Tuesday, with a high near 51°F and an 80% chance of showers. New Year’s Day looks drier but cooler, with highs around 40°F and partly cloudy skies.

Motorists should plan for hazardous driving conditions today, especially along Highway 460 and surrounding areas. Visibility may drop during heavy rain, and debris from strong winds could block roadways.

To stay safe, avoid driving through flooded streets, secure outdoor furniture, and charge electronics in case of power outages. Monitor local weather alerts and prepare for potential disruptions to holiday travel plans.
