Buffalo, N.Y. – Damaging wind gusts and hail could strike parts of western New York this evening, as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. for Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, storms are expected to rapidly intensify across the region Monday afternoon into evening. Wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible, with isolated power outages and tree damage likely in some areas.

The heaviest activity is expected along the I-86 corridor and rural stretches of Route 219, where travel may be hazardous due to sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Emergency officials urge residents to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard, and to secure outdoor items that could become airborne.

Communities in Jamestown, Olean, and Wellsville should be on alert during the evening commute. This is the first widespread severe thunderstorm threat for the region so far this June.

Stay tuned for weather alerts through local media or NOAA Weather Radio. Additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
