Alton, Ill. – Strong thunderstorms could hammer parts of southwestern Illinois through 10 p.m. Sunday, with the potential for damaging wind gusts and large hail prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch across four counties.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch — issued at 2:30 p.m. — covers Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, and Pike counties. The storms may develop rapidly this evening, with winds exceeding 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter possible.
Residents in towns such as Jerseyville, Carrollton, Pittsfield, and Hardin should stay alert for changing weather conditions. Outdoor plans, especially along the Illinois River or rural roadways, could be disrupted by sudden downpours and lightning. Secure outdoor items and avoid travel during any severe warnings that may follow.
Local emergency officials urge residents to charge devices and monitor NOAA weather radio or local alerts. If you’re driving and encounter heavy rain or wind-blown debris, pull over in a safe location away from trees or power lines.
The storm threat continues until 10 p.m., with additional advisories possible if conditions escalate.
