Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is bracing for strong to severe storms overnight on Friday, April 17, continuing into the early hours of Saturday. The National Weather Service has issued a weather alert, with the most severe impacts expected between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
A cold front moving southeastward is expected to bring widespread thunderstorms to the region. Areas under the highest risk, marked in yellow on the NWS map, could experience damaging winds and large hail. The threat of isolated flash flooding has also been noted, particularly in areas with heavy rainfall.
According to the NWS, the primary hazards associated with these storms are large hail and damaging wind gusts. Localized flooding could occur in low-lying areas with poor drainage systems. Residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and take appropriate precautions, including securing outdoor objects and being prepared to seek shelter if necessary.
The severe weather threat comes as a result of the shifting cold front, which is moving quickly southeastward across Indiana. Meteorologists recommend that individuals in the impacted areas monitor local forecasts and have an emergency kit ready in case power outages occur.
