Cape Girardeau, MO – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for the Mark Twain National Forest and surrounding areas in southeast Missouri due to high fire danger. Strong winds and dry conditions are creating an elevated risk of wildfires across the Quad State region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Paducah, gusty winds between 25 to 35 mph and low humidity levels between 25-35% are expected. The warning covers western portions of Missouri, with the driest conditions anticipated in the designated warning area. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions to prevent unintentional fires.
Additionally, the region faces a threat of severe thunderstorms on Wednesday. The NWS warns that a cold front moving through the Quad State area in the late afternoon and early evening could produce damaging winds and large hail. Thunderstorms are expected to develop along and ahead of the front, forming near the Mississippi River around 3 p.m. before moving eastward and exiting the area by 8 p.m.
Officials recommend monitoring local weather updates for further developments. Residents should secure outdoor objects, remain indoors during storms, and be prepared for potential power outages due to strong winds. The risk of severe storms and fire danger highlights the importance of preparedness in the coming days.
