Santa Fe, N.M. – Flash flooding is possible this afternoon and evening across parts of northern New Mexico as heavy thunderstorms target the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon burn scar area.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Flood Watch is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Monday for the East Slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Northeast Highlands, and the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Forecasters warn that rainfall rates could reach 0.75 inches in areas with already saturated ground, increasing the risk of rapid runoff and stream rises near recent wildfire burn scars.

Communities near Las Vegas, Mora, and Pecos are most at risk. Creeks and arroyos could overflow quickly with little warning. Officials urge residents to avoid low-lying crossings and be ready to move to higher ground if warnings are issued. Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roadways.

This is the latest in a string of storm systems to impact the area after weeks of above-average rainfall. Burn scars remain highly vulnerable due to reduced vegetation and loose soils.

Flood alerts may be upgraded later today if storm activity intensifies.
