San Francisco, CA – A high surf warning is in effect for San Francisco and neighboring coastal regions through 6 p.m. today, with waves reaching up to 40 feet at some beaches. Forecasters are also cautioning residents about potential coastal flooding in low-lying areas as heavy rain continues through Christmas Eve.

According to the National Weather Service, this weather system brings gusty winds of up to 25 mph and intense rainfall, making driving conditions hazardous on key coastal roads like Highway 1. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel near the coast and to stay updated on flood alerts.

The high surf is creating life-threatening conditions for swimmers, surfers, and anyone near the water. Sudden waves can sweep individuals into the sea, posing severe risks even to experienced swimmers. Officials urge beachgoers to avoid jetties, piers, and rocky shorelines until conditions improve.

Looking ahead, Christmas Day offers a brief respite, with mostly sunny skies and highs around 56 degrees expected. However, rain will return Wednesday night and persist into the weekend, with another 80% chance of precipitation on Thursday. Winds will gradually decrease, but areas prone to flooding should remain on alert as saturated ground increases runoff risks.

Residents should continue to monitor local weather updates and take precautions to protect property, especially in flood-prone zones. Emergency kits, sandbags, and clearing debris from drains are recommended to reduce potential damage.

Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
