Austin, Texas – Severe storms could rumble through Central Texas after midnight tonight, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado risk to areas along the I-35 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, a Level 2 severe storm risk is in place for cities including Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding Hill Country communities. The primary threat window spans late Thursday night into early Friday morning, with the most intense weather expected after midnight.

Counties like Travis, Bexar, Comal, and Hays may see intense downpours, hail larger than quarters, and gusts over 60 mph. Outdoor plans should be reconsidered, and residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings overnight. Flash flooding could become an issue, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

Travelers on I-35, US-281, and local roadways should be prepared for sudden visibility drops and road hazards. This system may be the strongest to impact the region since early spring, when a similar setup produced scattered wind damage and power outages.

Severe weather watches may be issued later this evening. Stay weather-aware, charge your devices, and be ready to shelter indoors if warnings are issued overnight.
