Abilene, Texas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the Big Country region this evening, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and isolated tornadoes through early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, scattered storms will begin forming to the west and northwest by mid-afternoon and will intensify as they track into the region between 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday. The storms are likely to merge into a single cluster, sweeping southeast through areas including Abilene, San Angelo, and Sweetwater before exiting by around 3 a.m.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of West Central Texas, including Tom Green and Taylor counties, under a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather. Residents should prepare for possible hail up to 3 inches in diameter, downed power lines, and travel disruptions from high wind gusts.

Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid travel during peak storm hours. If tornado warnings are issued, move to an interior room on the lowest floor immediately.

Storms are expected to weaken after midnight, but additional watches or warnings could be issued if the system intensifies. Stay weather-aware through local alerts.
