San Angelo, Texas – Travel across West Central Texas could become nearly impossible beginning Friday evening as a winter storm spreads snow, sleet, and ice across the region, creating dangerous road conditions and increasing the risk of power outages through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday for a large portion of West Central Texas. Moderate to heavy accumulations of snow, sleet, or ice are expected Friday night through Sunday, followed by dangerously cold temperatures Saturday night through Monday morning.
Cities including San Angelo, Abilene, Brownwood, Sweetwater, Ballinger, Coleman, Brady, Ozona, Junction, Mason, and Sonora are expected to see slick and hazardous conditions develop Friday night. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways are especially vulnerable, including stretches of U.S. Highway 67, U.S. 83, U.S. 84, and Interstate 20. Ice buildup could lead to tree damage and scattered power outages across rural and urban areas alike.
Officials urge residents to delay all non-essential travel and prepare for possible power interruptions. Drivers who must be on the roads should carry emergency supplies, keep phones charged, and check conditions through DriveTexas.org or by calling 511.
The winter storm warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories may be issued as colder air settles into the region early next week.
