Salt Lake City, UT – Flash flooding is probable across many slot canyons and dry washes this afternoon and evening, posing a significant risk to outdoor enthusiasts and residents. The National Weather Service (NWS) Salt Lake City has issued a warning for today, June 27, 2024, urging everyone to stay weather-aware and take necessary precautions.
According to the NWS, the probability of excessive rainfall leading to flash flooding is particularly high in areas such as Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Staircase-Escalante East, Natural Bridges National Monument, Grand Gulch, and San Rafael Swell. These locations have been marked as having a “Probable” risk of flash flooding, which means small slot canyons, dry washes, and small streams are expected to experience flash flooding.
For Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante West, and Arches National Park, the risk is labeled as “Possible,” indicating some slot canyons and dry washes may experience flash flooding. Zion National Park remains unaffected today but is urged to remain cautious.
The NWS advises the public to avoid these areas during the flash flood watch period. Key safety tips include moving to higher ground immediately, avoiding driving through flooded areas, and staying informed through local weather updates. For more detailed safety information, visit weather.gov/flood.
