Sacramento, Calif. – Extreme heat is set to grip much of Northern and Central California starting 11 a.m. Friday, with temperatures soaring to as high as 109°F and little overnight cooling, prompting a widespread heat advisory through 11 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, dangerously hot conditions will impact the Sacramento Valley, Northern San Joaquin Valley, and surrounding regions including Shasta Lake Area, Modesto, and Chico. Overnight lows will remain in the upper 60s to mid-70s, offering minimal relief from daytime highs near or above 100°F.

Cities such as Redding, Red Bluff, Fairfield, and Stockton are expected to see highs over 105°F. The advisory warns of increased risk for heat-related illness, especially for those working or exercising outdoors. Area waterways remain cold and fast-moving, posing added danger for people seeking to cool off in rivers or lakes.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Officials also caution against leaving children or pets in parked cars, where interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

The advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Saturday. Additional alerts could follow if the heat persists.
