Sacramento, CA – High winds and heavy snow are forecast to impact Northern California on Tuesday, creating hazardous travel conditions and prompting early holiday preparations. A stronger storm system is expected to bring wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph across Sacramento, with areas in the Sierra Nevada bracing for up to 10 inches of snow above 6,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will begin early Tuesday morning and continue into the evening. Residents in Sacramento are urged to secure outdoor decorations and other loose items, as winds from the south could create safety hazards. Meanwhile, snow levels in the Sierra Nevada will drop from 7,000 feet in the morning to around 5,000 feet by the afternoon.

The NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Western Plumas County, Lassen Park, and the West Slope of the Sierra Nevada. Travelers heading to mountain regions should expect slippery roads, chain controls, and delays, particularly along Interstate 80 near Blue Canyon and Highway 50. Gusting winds up to 45 mph could further disrupt visibility.

Holiday travelers are advised to check Caltrans updates via quickmap.dot.ca.gov or dial 511 before heading out. For local residents, the weather is expected to remain unsettled through Christmas Day, with potential lingering snow showers in higher elevations.

Prepare now by securing outdoor items, planning alternate routes, and leaving early if traveling through affected areas. This storm could significantly impact holiday plans, so vigilance is key.
