Richmond, VA – Drivers across Central Virginia have a narrow window to enjoy 60s and low 70s before a sharp backdoor cold front snaps temperatures down nearly 30 degrees and threatens slick bridges by the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, inland highs climb between 62 and 72 degrees through Sunday afternoon, with mostly sunny skies developing after early clouds clear. That warmth fades quickly after 8 p.m. Sunday as winds turn northeast and colder air pushes south across the region.

The temperature swing will be noticeable along Interstate 95, Interstate 64 and Route 288, where pavement readings could fall into the 30s before daybreak Monday. Northern counties may wake up to temperatures between 36 and 41 degrees, with southern sections hovering in the low to mid-40s. If light rain develops overnight, a brief rain-to-snow mix cannot be ruled out west of Richmond toward Goochland and Powhatan.

Bridges and overpasses along I-295 and Route 360 cool fastest, raising the risk for isolated slick spots before 7 a.m. Monday. Commuters should allow extra travel time, especially on elevated ramps and rural secondary roads.

Sunday will not feel threatening, but conditions change quickly after sunset. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices and monitor updates in case advisories are issued overnight.

Colder air lingers through Monday with additional updates expected if precipitation chances increase.
