Richmond, VA – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for the Richmond area Monday night into Tuesday morning, as very cold wind chills drop to 5 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield said wind chills across the Piedmont and the Interstate 95 corridor, including Richmond, are expected to range from 5 below zero to 5 above zero overnight. Eastern portions of Virginia and nearby regions are expected to see slightly higher values, generally 0 to 10 degrees above zero.
Forecasters warned that the most dangerous conditions will occur overnight and during early morning hours Tuesday, when prolonged exposure could lead to hypothermia or frostbite if proper precautions are not taken. The advisory covers central and eastern Virginia, including major population centers and travel corridors.
Officials urged residents to dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, and those with outdoor animals should ensure access to warm, dry shelter, unfrozen water, and adequate food.
The extreme cold may also impact daily routines and infrastructure. Residents are advised to protect exposed pipes, check heating systems, and use space heaters safely. Vehicles may experience starting issues, and untreated roads could remain icy despite dry conditions.
Commuters heading out early Tuesday, including students and workers along the I-95 corridor, should prepare for bitter wind chills at bus stops, train platforms, and parking areas, even if travel conditions appear otherwise manageable.
The National Weather Service said additional cold weather headlines may be issued if dangerous wind chills persist beyond Tuesday morning.
