PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – With Thanksgiving travel fast approaching, Rhode Island officials are reminding drivers to prepare their vehicles now for the season ahead. From Providence to Newport, motorists are encouraged to winterize cars and stock essential gear before colder weather and early storms arrive later this month.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, early November is the best time to complete maintenance checks — testing batteries, topping off antifreeze, and inspecting tires for tread depth. Officials urge all drivers to carry a basic winter emergency kit that includes a blanket, jumper cables, flashlight, bottled water, and traction aids like sand or kitty litter.

Travelers planning holiday trips on I-95, Route 4, or the Newport Bridge should also keep gas tanks at least half full and pack extra food, warm clothing, and a phone charger. “Taking care of simple tasks now prevents serious issues once temperatures drop and traffic increases,” a RIDOT spokesperson said. Those traveling between coastal and inland areas should be especially cautious, as conditions can vary during early winter weather.

RIDOT recommends bookmarking New England 511 for traffic, plow, and closure information once storms develop. With heavier travel expected across southern New England before Thanksgiving week, officials say a few minutes of preparation now can make all the difference for safe, smooth holiday travel across Rhode Island.
