Providence, R.I. – Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across Rhode Island Saturday, with rain chances peaking at 80% by mid-morning and lingering through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, showers may begin early Saturday, with storms likely between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall, particularly in the Providence metro area and southern counties. Daytime highs are expected to reach 69°F, with winds shifting from the east to south by afternoon.

Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas and along major roadways such as I-95 and Route 6. Friday night will also see showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 a.m., increasing risks for early Saturday travel. Rainfall could total between a quarter and half an inch, with higher amounts in isolated storms.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flood-prone areas, and limit non-essential travel during storm hours. Power outages may occur in areas with frequent lightning or strong gusts.

Rain chances taper off late Saturday night, with partly sunny skies returning Sunday and temperatures rebounding to the mid-60s. Additional advisories may be issued as the storm system approaches.
