Providence, R.I. – Scorching summer heat is building across Rhode Island, with a heat advisory in effect through 8 p.m. Monday and temperatures expected to top 91°F in Providence by Monday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, heat index values between 95 and 100 will develop across inland and urban areas of Southern New England, excluding the Berkshires and South Coasts. The highest risk hits Monday as heat and humidity combine to raise the chance of heat-related illnesses. Providence, Warwick, Woonsocket, and Pawtucket will see the brunt of this oppressive weather.
Sunday will already feel steamy, with a high near 88°F, but Monday will be the most dangerous stretch. Southwest winds will do little to relieve the swelter, and by early afternoon, the feels-like temperature could exceed 100° on city pavement and major roadways like Route 6 and I-95.
Cooling centers are open across Providence County. Power outages aren’t expected, but residents are urged to limit unnecessary appliance use during peak afternoon hours.
More advisories may follow if conditions worsen.
