Quad Cities, IA/IL – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois, and far northeast Missouri as critical fire weather conditions persist Friday afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning remains active until 8 p.m. CDT for much of eastern Iowa, including Buchanan, Linn, Scott, and Johnson counties. For northwestern Illinois counties such as Jo Daviess and Carroll, the warning extends until 10 p.m. CDT.
Southeast winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 30%, have created an environment where fires could ignite and spread rapidly. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s and lower 80s, further elevating the risk.
Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning, as any fires that develop could quickly become uncontrollable. Residents should secure outdoor materials that could be blown away and ensure all fire sources, such as grills and campfires, are properly extinguished.
A line of severe storms is expected later tonight, potentially bringing relief but also posing additional hazards due to strong winds and lightning. Fire officials urge residents to remain vigilant and adhere to local safety guidelines.
