Aberdeen, SD – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for central and northeast South Dakota and west-central Minnesota, effective from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. today. The warning highlights critical fire weather conditions due to strong winds and low relative humidity.

The affected areas include McPherson, Brown, Marshall, Roberts, Edmunds, Day, Potter, Faulk, Spink, Clark, Codington, Grant, Hamlin, Deuel, Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, and Buffalo counties in South Dakota, as well as Traverse and Big Stone counties in Minnesota.

Winds are expected to be south at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph in South Dakota and up to 35 mph in Minnesota. Relative humidity levels may drop as low as 20%, creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread. The public is urged to avoid open flames and be vigilant, as any fires that ignite could quickly become difficult to control.
