Washington, D.C. – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., until 7 p.m. Saturday due to strong winds and low humidity, increasing the risk of wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), northwest winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 15 to 25 percent, creating critical fire weather conditions. The warning covers areas along and east of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin mountains.

Officials warn that the combination of dry air, gusty winds, and low fuel moisture—ranging from 5 to 10 percent—could lead to the rapid spread of fires. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly discard cigarette butts, and secure any loose items that could be blown by the wind.

Fire departments across the region remain on high alert, and emergency services advise people to stay vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.

The Red Flag Warning is set to expire at 7 p.m., but weather conditions should continue to be monitored. For updates, residents can visit the NWS website or local emergency management services.
