Mattoon, IL – Wet and windy conditions are set to disrupt weekend plans for residents along the I-70 corridor in central and southeast Illinois, starting Friday afternoon. Remnants of Hurricane Helene will bring heavy rain and gusty winds, creating travel difficulties and forcing many outdoor events to reconsider plans.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that northeast winds could reach up to 45 mph, particularly in areas south of I-70, and localized flooding may occur with up to half an inch of rain expected. Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and any loose objects that could be blown by the wind. High-profile vehicles, including trucks and trailers, should be cautious of windy conditions, which could cause dangerous driving on Friday and Saturday.

The weather system is expected to improve by Sunday, with decreasing winds and temperatures rising into the mid-70s. Outdoor activities will be safer as drier and calmer conditions move in. However, residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and be prepared for last-minute changes to plans, especially on Friday and Saturday.
