Illinois – A midweek weather system will bring light rain to southern Illinois Wednesday, followed by a sharp temperature drop heading into the weekend. Travelers and residents along I-74 should prepare for wet roads and chilly winds as Thanksgiving approaches.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in the Quad Cities, scattered rain showers are expected across the region Wednesday, particularly during the evening. Highs will reach the low 40s before temperatures dip into the mid-20s by nightfall. Winds will remain calm on Wednesday but will intensify as colder air pushes through the region Thursday and Friday.
Thanksgiving Day will bring partly sunny skies with highs near 36°F. However, temperatures will drop drastically overnight, reaching as low as 11°F in some areas. By Friday, conditions will be blustery, with highs barely exceeding 27°F and wind chills dipping into single digits. These frigid conditions will persist into Saturday, with lows hovering in the teens and highs in the mid-20s.
Motorists should exercise caution on potentially slick roads Wednesday evening, especially along major routes like I-74 and I-88. Those planning holiday travel later in the week should dress in layers and prepare for freezing wind chills during outdoor activities.
Looking ahead, the cold spell will persist into the weekend, with sunny but frigid conditions expected Sunday. Temperatures may recover slightly next week, but no significant warm-up is anticipated.
