Houston, TX – Texans should prepare for a dramatic temperature drop as freezing weather grips Houston and surrounding areas starting tonight. Subfreezing conditions are expected to last up to 18 hours in some locations, with nighttime lows dipping to the low 30s or colder through Wednesday morning. Drivers along I-45 and other major roadways should take precautions as icy conditions could develop.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston-Galveston, freezing temperatures will begin Sunday night and extend through Wednesday, with Monday night expected to see the coldest conditions. Daytime highs on Monday and Tuesday will struggle to reach the mid-40s. Residents are advised to wrap outdoor pipes, check heating systems, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak freezing hours to ensure safety.
Looking at the extended forecast, the cold spell will persist into midweek. Monday will bring clear skies and a high near 44°F, but gusty winds up to 20 mph will make it feel significantly colder. Tuesday remains chilly with a high of 47°F under sunny skies. Rain chances return Thursday as temperatures begin to moderate, with highs climbing to the low 50s by Friday.
The arctic front is part of a larger weather system moving through Texas, creating potential for hazardous travel conditions. The NWS urges residents to monitor updates and follow safety tips, including layering clothing and protecting pets and plants.
