Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Snow showers and gusty winds are creating hazardous travel conditions across western Pennsylvania today, with the greatest impacts expected in the higher elevations and along key travel corridors.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, snow showers developed toward dawn and will continue through the day and into tonight. The best chance for accumulating snow is across the ridges of southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, where several inches of snow are possible. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for these ridge-top areas. Farther north, including areas near and north of Interstate 80, snowfall totals of around 1 to 2 inches are expected, while lower elevations see lighter, more scattered accumulations.

Snow amounts elsewhere will generally remain light, but localized heavier bands or snow shower training could briefly drop a few inches in a short time. Slick roads and reduced visibility are possible during heavier bursts, especially on untreated surfaces. Pittsburgh, Butler, Indiana, Latrobe, and Uniontown may all see intermittent travel slowdowns.

Winds will add another challenge this afternoon. Gusts between 30 and 40 mph are expected across much of the region, with stronger gusts of 45 to 55 mph possible along exposed ridgetops, including eastern Tucker County, where a Wind Advisory is in effect.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution in higher terrain. Snow showers gradually taper tonight, but breezy and cold conditions will linger. Additional advisories may be issued if snow bands intensify.
