Pittsburgh, PA – Western Pennsylvania commuters face slick, icy roads Thursday morning as a sudden overnight flash freeze has created treacherous driving conditions. Wet surfaces froze rapidly after temperatures dropped from 43°F late Wednesday to 25°F by early Thursday, turning untreated roads and sidewalks into potential hazards.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special weather statement warning of flash freezing on major routes such as I-279 and I-376, along with local roads. Snow squalls are also expected, reducing visibility during the morning commute. Gusts of up to 40 mph will further complicate travel, possibly blowing debris or light objects onto roadways.
Drivers are urged to take precautions, including reducing speed, avoiding cruise control, and allowing extra distance between vehicles. Pedestrians should exercise caution on sidewalks and parking lots, where ice may not be immediately visible.
Thursday will remain cold and breezy, with a high near 29°F and wind chills dipping into the single digits. Snow showers could bring light accumulations of less than an inch in some areas by the evening.
Looking ahead, temperatures will gradually rise heading into the weekend. Friday will bring mostly sunny skies and a high of 31°F, while Saturday remains dry with highs in the mid-30s. By Sunday, a brief warm-up is expected as temperatures climb to 47°F under mostly sunny skies. However, rain returns late Sunday night into Monday, with highs reaching the mid-50s early next week.
Motorists and residents are advised to remain vigilant throughout Thursday and adjust plans as needed to ensure safety during hazardous conditions.
