Phoenix, Ariz. – Monsoon activity is expected to pick up across Arizona by early next week, with storms bringing lightning, gusty winds, and pockets of heavy rainfall to several parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, storm chances will remain limited through this weekend, mainly confined to higher terrain north and west of Phoenix with only a 10 to 30 percent chance of showers. However, better moisture across southwestern Arizona and southeastern California could bring a few afternoon storms, some producing localized flooding.

By Tuesday into Wednesday, conditions will shift more dramatically. A surge in monsoon moisture will increase storm potential across south-central Arizona, including the Phoenix metro area, as well as southeastern California. Forecasters warn residents to watch for blowing dust reducing visibility on highways, especially along I-10, and for brief but heavy downpours that could cause flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, allow extra time for travel during storm periods, and avoid driving through flooded washes. Storm chances are expected to linger through midweek, with additional advisories possible.
