Phoenix, Arizona – Arizona residents should brace for a sweltering and potentially hazardous Sunday as triple-digit temperatures and unhealthy ozone levels converge across the Phoenix Metro area.

According to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, a High Pollution Advisory remains in effect for Maricopa County through Sunday night due to elevated ozone levels. The advisory, triggered by stagnant air and intense sunshine, poses a serious health threat—especially to children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues.

The National Weather Service expects Sunday’s high in Phoenix to hit 103°F under mostly sunny skies, with east winds reaching up to 15 mph. While the heat alone is intense, it’s the combination of temperature and trapped ozone that makes outdoor activity especially risky. Health officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor work and avoiding midday sun between noon and 6 p.m.

Drivers are urged to avoid solo commutes on I-10, I-17, and Loop 202. Instead, use public transportation, telecommute, or carpool where possible. Delay yard work or use of gas-powered equipment until after sunset to help reduce ozone buildup.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday bring more of the same: 100°F highs and breezy afternoons. Nighttime lows will remain in the upper 70s, offering little relief. A slight cooldown is expected Tuesday night with a low near 63°F before highs rebound later in the week.

The Ozone Advisory may be extended again if poor air quality persists. For updates, visit azdeq.gov/forecast/phoenix.
