Phoenix, AZ – A warm, clear start to Thursday will give way to a sharp pattern change across central Arizona as the first widespread rain in weeks pushes toward the Valley late Friday. After days of mild, upper-80s sunshine, cooler air and increasing clouds will build in from the west, marking one of the season’s first true fall transitions.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, dry air and light winds will dominate Thursday, but a deepening trough off the Pacific will steer moisture into the region by late Friday. Scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder are expected, mainly along and north of I-10 through early Saturday. Totals of a quarter inch are possible in the metro, with higher pockets in mountain foothills.
Travelers should plan for slick roads Friday night through early Saturday, especially during morning commutes. ADOT advises avoiding high-speed driving on wet pavement and allowing extra time for weekend errands. A few outdoor events could see brief delays as temperatures dip nearly 20 degrees by Saturday morning.
By Sunday, drier air will return with highs rebounding to near 80°F, offering ideal conditions for leaf cleanup or early holiday decorating. Still, forecasters note another cool push may arrive early next week—an early “Winter tease” signaling that fall warmth won’t last long.
Clear skies this morning also follow a stunning overnight light show as a rare G4 solar storm created visible Northern Lights as far south as Texas. While the auroras fade, brief communication disruptions may continue across Arizona today.
