Indiana, Pennsylvania – Roads across western Pennsylvania’s higher elevations could turn slick after 10 p.m. Monday as a wintry mix develops, creating hazardous travel through the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday for Jefferson County, Indiana County and the higher elevations of Westmoreland and Fayette counties. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow followed by ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.
Light snow may briefly coat roads before midnight, especially near Brookville and Punxsutawney. As temperatures hover near freezing overnight, precipitation will transition to freezing rain. Ice could glaze bridges and steep grades along U.S. Route 119, Route 22 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Donegal and Somerset County’s western ridges, increasing the risk of spinouts before daybreak.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and avoid unnecessary travel during the early morning hours. Residents can report snow or ice totals to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. Temperatures are expected to rise after sunrise Tuesday, helping conditions gradually improve. Additional advisories could follow if icing becomes more widespread overnight.
