State College, PA – Residents of Cambria and Somerset counties are bracing for dangerously cold weather as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through noon Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The current Cold Weather Advisory, in place until 7 p.m. Monday, will give way to harsher conditions as wind chills drop to as low as 24 degrees below zero. Officials warn that frostbite on exposed skin can occur in as little as 30 minutes.
NWS highlights that the dangerously low wind chills could make outdoor exposure hazardous, with risks of frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are urged to stay indoors and wear multiple layers if venturing outside. Hats, gloves, and scarves are essential to prevent heat loss.
The advisory specifically affects the cities of Johnstown and Somerset, where temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing. The warning extends through the middle of the week, complicating travel and daily routines.
Drivers are encouraged to keep emergency kits in vehicles, while those staying home should ensure pipes are insulated to prevent freezing.
