Pittsburgh, PA – A mix of freezing rain and drizzle is expected across western Pennsylvania today, leading to potential hazardous conditions, especially in higher elevations east of Pittsburgh and areas north of I-80.
According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh, temperatures will warm throughout the day, transitioning precipitation from snow to ice and eventually rain from southwest to northeast. Snow accumulation is expected to remain minimal, but freezing rain could create slick surfaces on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
The highest impact from ice is forecast for ridges and elevated areas, particularly in the Laurel Highlands and north of I-80. The most severe icing is likely this afternoon and evening, with the potential for .10” or more of ice accumulation in some locations. Most of southwestern Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, will see lighter amounts.
Motorists should exercise caution during the evening commute as icy conditions could develop rapidly. The NWS advises monitoring updated forecasts and using extra care on untreated roads. The transition to rain is expected overnight, reducing the risk of further ice accumulation.
