Clarion, Pa. – Sensitive plants across northwestern Pennsylvania and the high terrain of eastern West Virginia could suffer damage overnight as a late-season frost sets in, with temperatures expected to drop near freezing by early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Monday for Clarion, Jefferson, and Forest counties in Pennsylvania, as well as eastern Tucker County in West Virginia. Temperatures may fall as low as 33°F, cold enough to form frost on exposed surfaces.

Gardeners and farmers in Brookville, Punxsutawney, Clarion, and the Canaan Valley area should take precautions Sunday evening by covering tender vegetation or moving potted plants indoors. Even brief exposure to early morning frost can harm blooming flowers, vegetables, and crops not yet hardened to cold.

This chill comes just as much of the region transitions to early summer conditions, making it one of the latest frost advisories in recent years for some parts of the Allegheny Plateau. Elevated valleys and ridges, especially around Davis and Thomas, WV, are most at risk due to radiational cooling.

Temperatures will rebound later Monday, but the National Weather Service notes additional advisories are possible overnight if clear skies persist.
