State College, Pa. – Severe thunderstorms could impact 17 counties across central Pennsylvania until 10 p.m. Tuesday, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts, hail, and lightning to cities including Altoona, State College, and Williamsport.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 191 remains active for a large portion of the state, covering Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clinton, Clearfield, Lycoming, and Somerset counties, among others. The watch was later expanded to include Huntingdon and Mifflin counties, where Lewistown, Mount Union, and Huntingdon may see storms intensify into the evening.
Strong cells capable of producing wind gusts over 60 mph and quarter-size hail have already been observed in parts of western Pennsylvania and are tracking northeast. Residents in elevated areas such as Cambria and McKean counties should be especially cautious, as terrain can enhance wind impacts and limit visibility.
Drivers should delay travel where possible and remain alert for downed branches or sudden flooding on rural roadways like U.S. Route 22 and Interstate 99. If sheltering indoors, avoid using wired electronics and keep mobile devices charged in case of power outages.
This watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., with additional warnings possible if storms persist or redevelop. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local media for immediate updates.
