State College, Pa. – Oppressive heat and a rising threat of storms could disrupt midweek plans across Central Pennsylvania as dangerous summer weather settles in.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for Bedford, Blair, Huntingdon, Southern Centre, and surrounding counties. Heat index values may top 100°F during the afternoon, with real air temperatures hitting 95°F in cities like Altoona and Lock Haven.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. High humidity will make even shaded areas feel uncomfortable. Power grids may see increased demand as residents turn to air conditioning to stay cool.
By Wednesday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop, with gusty winds and lightning possible between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Drivers along I-99 and Route 322 near State College should prepare for reduced visibility and slick roads.
Overnight lows remain near 70°F, offering little relief. Heat-sensitive industries and those without access to cooling should prepare for strain and potential health risks through midweek.
Spotters are encouraged to report any hazardous weather Wednesday evening. While no widespread flooding is forecast, locally heavy downpours are possible with stronger storms.
Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening. A break from the heat is expected late Thursday.
