Pittsburgh, Pa. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to hammer much of western and central Pennsylvania through Tuesday evening, bringing risks of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy downpours across 33 counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. EDT for areas including Pittsburgh, Erie, Altoona, and State College. The watch spans from Allegheny and Beaver counties in the southwest to Tioga and Lycoming counties in the north-central region.

Motorists on major roadways like I-79, I-80, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike should be prepared for sudden low visibility and ponding on roads. Power outages could occur where stronger gusts hit, particularly in rural areas like Cameron and Potter counties. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor weather alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel during the most active storm periods.

This system marks one of the more widespread severe thunderstorm threats of the spring season for Pennsylvania, following a relatively quiet April. More isolated storms could continue to fire up overnight, with additional advisories possible into Wednesday morning.
