Pittsburgh, Pa. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to begin developing as early as 2 p.m. Thursday across western and central Pennsylvania, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, storms will intensify between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. EDT as a warm front lifts through the region. The severe weather risk will sweep from west to east, with areas like Wheeling, Washington, and Pittsburgh in the storm zone from mid- to late afternoon.
The most likely hazards include wind gusts over 60 mph and large hail. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out, especially in areas southeast of Pittsburgh. Flash flooding is also a concern in low-lying neighborhoods and spots with poor drainage.
Drivers are urged to stay off roads during peak storm hours, especially along I-70 and I-76, where conditions could deteriorate quickly. Secure outdoor items, charge phones in advance, and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
The severe threat should taper by 9 p.m., though additional alerts may be issued as storms track east. Stay weather-aware throughout the day.
